Edinburgh Airport is Scotlands capital airport with over 50 airlines and serving around 85 destinations. I use the airport every year and find it extremely pleasant and user friendly. They have their own wonderful bus service (the number 100 bus) which will take you from the Airport into the centre of Edinburgh and back. This is currently £5 for a return ticket and the buses are frequent, every 10 minutes it seems during the day. You can't miss the bus either as there always seems to be at least one sitting outside the front doors. The airport isn't huge and you'll easily find all the car hires adjacent to your luggage pick up. Though car is really not necessary if you are only exploring Edinburgh.

Taxis from Edinburgh airport to the City Centre generally take 25 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Edinburgh also has an excellent rail system. Waverely railway station and Haymarket Station. Waverley is located in the very heart of Edinburgh, near to the Royal Mile, Castle and Princes Street. Haymarket station is just a 5 minute walk to the West End of Princes Street,  there is a rail service every 15 minutes to Glasgow and regular services to all other stations in Scotland and the UK.  Haymarket Railway Station is 25 minutes by bus or taxi from the airport..
