You've probably heard that it rains a little in Scotland, and the weather can sometimes be a wee bit nippy even in summer. So now you're wondering what to pack as you'd much rather leave the woolly sweaters at home and save space for those fluffy Highland cows, nessie ornaments, sweeties, whisky, and tartan caps with red hair...
Read on for what we would advise..
Edinburghs annual rainful is no more than Londons.. you really can leave these at home!
Winter Visits to Edinburgh Villa
Edinburgh really doesn't get much snow during winter. January and Febuary are the coldest months with temperatures averaging a low of 1°C with 6°C high. It is definitely advisable to pack a thick lined coat, hat and gloves. Edinburgh is lovely during December with a winter wonderland of fairground rides, roller coasters, shows and Britains largest outdoor ice rink. The Hogmanay (New Years Eve) party is also the largest in the UK. Remember that late Winter is also a good time of year to experience the city without crowds and a great time of year for bargain shopping! Nows the time to purchase fine crystal, woolens, fashion and handicrafts (those woolly sweaters make great protective packing material). Most tourist attractions in Edinburgh are open year round, and our rental house is very cosy too!
Spring Self Catering in Edinburgh
Layers are always recommended when visiting Scotland no matter what the season. Spring has crisp clear days which are perfect for visiting gardens with their bulbs and flowering azaleas. You may not need that down filled jacket, but bring a nice fleece, your gloves, and pack a thick sweater too, you won't be needing shorts yet.
There are many festivals February - April including a Snowdrop Festival, Ceilidh Culture Festival and an Edinburgh Spring Festival. Always something to do and see!

Long Summer Days
Warm sunny days in Edinburgh are absolutely delightful. The sun sets late and rises early (we have thick curtains in the bedrooms!). Pack t-shirts, shorts and some light sweaters or cardigans. Edinburghs famous haar which is a heavy cold sea mist can strike even through summer so you'll need some warmish clothes too and a light rain coat (or you can purchase cheap waterproof cagouls for less than 10 each). Edinburgh Villa has 2 children sizes available for your use. If you're planning a visit during the International Festival in August, book early. Hotel, B&B and Self Catering accommodation books up way in advance.
An Autumn Break
Autumn in Edinburgh is generally mild, similar to Spring but with more rain. Early September usually has lovely weather and is a quieter time of year than spring and summer and therefore an ideal time to come visit the city. Weather in Scotland is changeable, and the age old expression "you'll get four seasons in the one day" describes our weather perfectly. The 'Tattie holidays' is a fortnight school holiday in October, you may wish to reserve an October rental early.
